Manchester United are now leading the race to sign 16-year-old Sunderland striker Joe Hugill, with Tottenham having also shown an interest in the young forward.

The tall striker has caught the eye of Premier League clubs playing for Sunderland Under-18s, with Tottenham scouting him and considering a move before the coronavirus crisis.

However, the global pandemic has seen their plans stall and United are hoping to make the most of the opportunity and swoop for the striker.

The Sun reports that Man Utd have been in contact with Sunderland over Hugill’s future and are confident of securing a six-figure deal for the teenager.

Joe Hugill has caught the attention of Premier League clubs

United have already picked up promising left-back Logan Pye from Sunderland this year and the Black Cats are struggling to keep hold of their young talents.

Speaking in January coach Paul Bryson bemoaned the club’s inability to stop bigger clubs poaching their best youngsters.

‘What perhaps the public don’t realise is that in a year, we have lost four of our outstanding prospects to big Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool,’ Bryson told the Sunderland Echo.

‘The latest was only last week when 16-year-old left back Logan Pye was tempted to switch to Man United.

‘We cannot offer professional terms until players are 17 so we are powerless to stop this practice.

‘It is very disheartening to lose good players who have been with the club since they were nine-years-old.’
