Sunday, 16 May 2021, witnessed the deadliest day of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, as per the data provided by Israeli authorities and the Palestinian Health Ministry. With Hamas launching over 100 rockets towards Israel on Sunday, Israel obliterated a family's home in Gaza and the house of Hamas' Gaza leader
Israel's airstrike on Gaza has resulted in the killing of 43 Palestinians, which includes eight children. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the incident further injured 50 others, most of them are children and women. The airstrike by Israel Defence Force (IDF) was targeted towards Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
Sinwar has been the leader of Hamas since 2017 and lives in the Khan Yunis neighborhood of Southern Gaza. The early morning airstrike did not hurt Sinwar, but the incident brought the death toll in Gaza to a total of 197. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that the death toll includes 34 women and 58 children, with 1,235 Palestinians injured. The ministry and the paramedics believe that the number is to rise as the search operation continues. The civil defense team and the medical team of Palestine reported having rescued five children from the rubble that resulted from the Sunday morning airstrikes.
According to IDF, the rockets fired from Gaza have killed ten Israelis. As part of the retaliation, Israelis have continued the airstrike on Gaza into the early mornings of Monday. On the official Twitter account held by the Israeli Air Force, it was stated that fighter jets had targeted nine high-ranking Hamas commanders' residences in Gaza. A separate tweet by the IDF said the fighter jets had targeted a tunnel that harbored 'terror infrastructure,' which is near a mosque and kindergarten in the southern part of Gaza. IDF further tweeted that on Sunday morning Hamas' military wing fired 120 rockets, 11 fell in Gaza.
The conflict began due to the controversy fuelled by the planned eviction of Palestinian families from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. Further restrictions on the meeting of people near the Old City escalated the conflict, which is witnessing one of the worst violence since the 2014 Gaza War. As per UN report, the war witnessed the killing of 2,200 Gazans, of which 550 plus was children, and more than half of the deceased were civilians.
